LUBBOCK, Texas — For the second time this season, senior first baseman Cameron Warren of the No. 9 Texas Tech baseball team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Warren has now garnered the accolade twice, also earning the honor on Mar. 11 after Tech posted a 5-0 mark against San Diego State and Wichita State. He is the second Red Raider in as many weeks to receive the award after junior infielder Josh Jung got the nod last week.
The Midwest City, Okla., native led the conference in hitting, slugging and on base percentage for the week. He returned to his home state to hit .583 in Tech’s three-game sweep at Oklahoma with four of his seven hits going for extra bases.
He homered in consecutive innings of the series opener in Norman to help Tech rally from down 6-3 in the sixth to take a 10-6 victory. His solo shot to lead off the sixth cut the lead to two, and then a three-run blast in the seventh gave Tech its first lead of the ballgame at 7-6. He followed that up on Saturday by going 2-for-3 with a double and two walks.
Warren also had a home run, a double and three RBI as part of Tech’s 19-11 comeback on Wednesday against UTRGV. The Red Raiders scored 19 unanswered runs from the third through the sixth with Warren connecting on a three-run home run that pushed Tech ahead 14-9 in the sixth.
The Big 12 leader in RBI, Warren has driven in 60 runs this year which is one ahead of the pace Jung set during his 2018 All-American season. Jung finished the year 10th on the school’s single-season RBI list with 80.
Warren has been a big piece of the Red Raiders going 10-1 in their last 11 games, hitting .400 and with team highs in home runs (5) and RBI (16). He currently ranks 12th nationally in RBI and 34th nationally in home runs with 13.
A preseason All-Big 12 Selection, this is the latest accolade for Warren, who has also earned NCBWA National Hitter of the Week on Mar. 12 and was added to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Midseason Watch List on Apr. 22.
Warren and the Red Raiders will return to Rip Griffin Park on Tuesday for a doubleheader against FIU. The day gets underway at 2 p.m. with both games available on TexasTech.TV and on the Texas Tech Sports Network.
