While Dustin Faught won the second state title for Brownfield, it was the first in boys’ basketball. Dickie Faught won the 1988 girls’ basketball championship for Brownfield with Sheryl Swoopes.
This years’ team had four seniors, including point guard Alex McCrary who propelled the Runnin’ Cubs into the state tournament with 30 points against Childress in the regional final. In Saturday’s state championship, McCrary finished with only 11 points, but 9 came in the second half. Coach Faught said, that McCrary has an impact just as much on the floor as he does, off the floor.
“Alex is our floor leader,” Faught said. “He’s like having another coach on the floor, because he’s got such a high basketball IQ. His leadership in the locker room and in practice, the way he practices and the way he wants to get better and constantly improve his game, has rubbed off on every single kid we have in the program.”
