Thursday night Texas Tech’s junior quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Nic Shimonek set a Big 12 record, becoming the first quarterback duo to each throw for four touchdowns in the same game.
The Red Raiders starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down in the third quarter with an unknown shoulder injury, but over their last six offensive drives Shimonek lead Tech to four touchdowns, on his way to a 95.2 quarterback rating, including 271 pass yards on 15-21 passing, as well as four passing touchdowns.
“You know with this offense, when you get into rhythm, I mean you’ve seen Pat do it the past two years,” Shimonek said. “I’ve said it in a couple of interviews over the summer, you have to prepare like you’re the starter, whether you are second, third, or fourth string.”
“There’s not a harder worker on the team. I’ve seen him do that in practice. I know how good he is, but it’s good for his teammates, other coaches, the fans to see what he can do,” Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “I mean he threw some incredible passes. I don’t know what his quarterback rating was, but it had to be incredible.”
Now it shouldn’t be overlooked the mental fortitude that it took both the Texas Tech football team, and Nic Shimonek to be able to overcome the possible loss of their start quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. However, the verdict will still be out for Shimonek, given that his performance came against a KU team that has lost 18 of it’s last 19 games.
When the Red Raiders travel to Manhattan, KS to face Kansas State next weekend, it could potentially be Shimonek’s first start since his days at Mildred high school in Corsicana, TX.
