The Texas Tech soccer team rose to No. 16 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings, the league announced today.

It marks a three-spot jump for the Red Raiders from their preseason debut in the poll at No. 19 on Aug. 2.

Tech put together a spotless opening weekend, defeating New Mexico, 2-1, on Friday, Aug. 19, followed by a shutout victory over Missouri State, 1-0, two nights later.

All three of the Red Raider goals were scored by freshmen, as midfielder Jordie Harr tallied both of Tech’s goals against the Lobos on Friday night. The Sachse, Texas, native earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Tuesday for her performance over the weekend. Forward Jade King connected on the game-winner against the Bears on Sunday, after being setup by a header from Gwennie Puente. King has recorded six shots on goal after two matches in 2016.

The shutout also moved senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson’s career total to 20.5. She sits just 8.5 behind Tech’s all-time shutout leader Victoria Esson in the school’s record books.

The No. 16 Red Raiders return to action on Friday, Aug. 26, when they host Arizona at the John Walker Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Tech will square off with Northeastern in Lubbock, which is also set for a 7 p.m. first kick.
