Texas Tech baseball’s junior outfielder Tanner Gardner has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced today.
It’s the second time the Frisco native has earned the award, last doing so almost a year ago to the date on March 21, 2016. Gardner’s honor marks the second Player of the Week award for Tech this season, as senior infielder Hunter Hargrove was selected after the first weekend of the season. The Red Raiders have won all three of the conference’s weekly awards in 2017.
Gardner put together another great week at the plate last week, hitting .600 over four games against Arizona and UTSA. He racked up nine hits, including four doubles, while walking three times. He also recorded three RBI and six runs scored.
Over the first three games of the week, Gardner produced multi-hit performances, sandwiching a four-hit night against the Roadrunners on Friday, March 10. The junior posted four singles, matching a career-high, while driving in two RBI and scoring another in the 7-6 win over UTSA. Gardner scored at least one run in all four games last week, including three against then-No. 4 Arizona on March 7.
During his nine-game hitting streak, Gardner has posted six multi-hit games, including five consecutive from March 4-11. He has 20 hits, 10 RBI and 11 runs in 2017 for a .294 hitting clip.
The No. 4 Red Raiders return to action on Tuesday, March 14, when they take on UT-Arlington at 7 p.m. at Globe Life Park in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers.
