In the Red Raiders pre game media availability to preview Tech’s matchup against TCU, Texas Tech head men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith said that at this point, his team is playing as well as any team he has coached.

By the way, once upon a time he did coach a national championship team at Kentucky.

The magic of the NCAA tournament has proven, you’ve just got to get in to have a chance.

Now, last season the Big 12’s last two teams selected, Oklahoma State and Texas, reached eight wins in conference play. Just one more win that Tech has right now.

So is that the magic number this season?

“Of course we are going for all of them, but for sure we think we need two more wins to get into the tournament,” Texas Tech sophomore point guard Keenan Evans said.

However, the head ball coach was not as sold on a certain number of wins.

“I don’t know if there is a certain number of wins that we have to have,” Smith said. “In my career I’ve never [felt that way]. I just think that if you don’t take care of business – we’re not a program like Kansas or Oklahoma where we can talk about where we’ll be seeded – I know what you’re talking about, but we’re not at that point yet.”

With four games left to go in Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will host TCU, before hitting the road to face #2 Kansas and #14 West Virginia, before returning home to close out conference play against Kansas State.

As for Texas Tech’s bracketology breakdown:

The latest projections see Texas Tech as high as a 7-seed according to CBS and USA Today, an 8-seed per ESPN, and a 9-seed by Yahoo.

However, a lot of things can still change over the last four games, including the Big 12 tournament.
