In Monday’s media availability Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard could best be described as a parent giving you one of those lectures that you’ve heard one too many times.

I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.

“We’ve got good guys, but sometimes in the competition and in the heat of this level, we need a little bit more grit,” Beard said. “We’re looking for some of these nice guys that we have to find another level.

Sometimes it doesn’t come down to the fact that you lost, but how you lost that is the difference. Collectively the Red Raiders have to realize that you play every game, and individually they have some guys that have to turn it up a notch.

“It’s win one, lose one, win one, lose one, and now we’re 3-4. Until you get to that level and realize that every game is the biggest game on your schedule, it’s difficult to take the next step,” Beard said.

“Basically going into every game you’ve just got to get yourself prepared to go into a fight,” Texas Tech senior point guard Devon Thomas said. “It’s definitely a fight when we go down there to Waco, and I think everybody’s mindset is in the right place right now.”

The good news is Texas Tech has been in this same place before. Last season the Red Raiders won five straight Big 12 games. It was the first time that they had done that in since the inception of the conference. It’s what ended up catapulting them to an NCAA Tournament birth by the end of the year. One of those wins during that five-game win streak came at Baylor, where they head this Wednesday.
