The Texas Tech Red Raiders welcomed the media to Jones AT&T Stadium on Sunday for their annual media day. As football season gets underway there was optimism and excitement all around.
Coach Kingsbury was among those ready to get going, “this was the best offseason we’ve had watching our players work, the energy the enthusiasm, I’m just excited to see how that translates into fall camp”.
One thing that stood out from all the talk was the evolution of Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback quit baseball and was able to devote an entire offseason to football for the first time in his career.
His coach could not have been happier about the decision, “he looks like a completely different person, different player, he’s gained a lot of weight he’s gotten bigger stronger faster”.
Mahomes has used the offseason to improve on the mistakes he made last season, “I really tried to learn from my mistakes last year I had a lot of interceptions I’m trying to cut that in half at least and being able to learn from that is something that I’ve had really done”.
On the defense side of the ball the optimism remains but there are plenty of question marks for defensive coordinator David Gibbs, including having to play multiple young players.
Gibbs said he was concerned but at the same time, these young guys will have to learn fast.
“No doubt it’s going to happen but to me instead of playing bad defense and playing a bunch of seniors at least you know those freshmen going out there are going to get better, they are going to learn from their mistakes”.
The Red Raiders open up fall practice tomorrow afternoon and the season begins September 3rd against Stephen F. Austin.
