The Texas Tech men’s tennis team will meet No. 13 Florida State as part of the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend announced Thursday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Red Raiders will be paired with No. 18 Tennessee and No. 28 Tulane at the four-team Tallahassee site which will be played outdoors at the Speicher Tennis Center.
The cumulative 23.75 ranking among the four teams is the second-hardest weekend site only behind the Ann Arbor site which features No. 14 Michigan, No. 17 Baylor, No. 20 Georgia and No. 29 North Carolina State.
“It’s a great opportunity for our program to go play a couple of quality matches early in the season,” Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. “It’s a long way away, but I feel that the ITA Kick-Off Weekend will be a great experience for our squad.”
Opening round matchups are slated for Saturday, January 26 followed by championship and consolation rounds on Sunday, January 27. The winner of the Tallahassee site will be one of 16 teams to qualify for the 2019 ITA National Indoor Championships in February hosted by the University of Illinois.
Texas Tech has secured a 9-11 record on ITA Kick-Off Weekend dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Raiders have won at least one match in seven of the last 10 seasons and qualified for the 2011 and 2016 ITA National Indoor Championships.
January’s matchup will mark the third consecutive season that the two programs have met in tennis. The Seminoles have won the previous three meetings which includes a 4-1 decision at the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Lubbock.
