Monday morning Texas Tech head football coach Kliff Kingsbury announced that redshirt sophomore Justin Murphy has left the program.
The news comes after Murphy did not make the trip to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State.
Kingsbury cited that the departure was related to medical injuries but did not give specifics.
“I guess his injuries. You’d have to take it up with him,” Kingsbury said. “I’m not sure how you would phrase it. He would be the one to speak with about that.”
Murphy played in nine games this season, and started in eight of those games.
He appeared in five games the year before, but tore his ACL against Baylor late in the season and never returned.
Monday afternoon, Murphy officially announced his retirement on Twitter:
