Texas Tech softball fell, 10-1, to No. 7 Oklahoma Sunday in the final regular season game of the 2016 campaign.
With the loss, the playing careers of Texas Tech’s three seniors, Jordan Bettiol, Kirsten Schwirtlich and Brooke Scott, came to an end.
“Our three seniors really did leave an impact on this team,” head Texas Tech softball coach Adrian Gregory said. “Those girls work very hard. Our seniors have taught our undergrads how to work hard. With the talent we have coming back and the work ethic that has been established there is a very bright future for Texas Tech softball.”
The seventh-ranked Sooners worked out of a two-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, before taking an early lead with a three-hit, four-run home half of the frame.
Oklahoma added four more runs in the second as the Sooners combined for six hits, including a two-run homer from Caleigh Clifton, to carry an 8-0 advantage into the top of the third.
The Sooner offense stayed hot in the bottom of the third inning increasing their lead to 10-0.
Following a leadoff fly out in the top of the fourth, Texas Tech catcher Susan Welborn got the Red Raiders on the board with a solo shot to straightaway center field. The homer was Welborn’s 11th of the season and brought the Texas Tech home run total to 60 for the year.
“I am not surprised by the 60 home runs this season,” added Gregory. “Our kids swing hard. They just really want it bad and they fight hard every at-bat. They work hard and this is an incredibly fun group.”
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 23-32 on the season, including a 6-12 mark in Big 12 play. The loss also dropped the Red Raiders to 7-42 all-time against the Sooners, including a 4-22 mark in games played in Norman.
