Texas Tech softball fell 8-4 to Texas in the third game of the Red Raiders’ three-game series against the Longhorns at McCombs Field Sunday afternoon.

“In the first inning we didn’t make a play that we should have and then in the fifth we had a play not go our way,” head Texas Tech softball coach Adrian Gregory said. “The bad thing was that those plays shook us and turned into more than what they should have been. We are still a young team and need to try to not worry so much about things that are out of our control.”

The Red Raiders took an early 1-0 lead as Kierra Miles blasted her 14th home run of the season with two outs in the first.

The lead would be short lived as the Longhorns piled up four runs on two hits in the home half of the inning to send the game to the second with UT holding a 4-1 lead.

The Red Raiders cut into the Longhorn lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on one hit and an error to bring the Longhorns back to the plate with a 4-3 lead.

Texas responded with another four-run inning, including a two RBI triple by Becah Alcozer, to extend their lead to 8-3.

Texas Tech added another run as Susan Welborn lifted a solo shot to left in the sixth, but it would not be enough as the Texas defense would quiet the Red Raider bats in the seventh to close out the 8-4 victory.

“I like how we fought today,” said Gregory. “I thought Tiarra Davis threw well for them all weekend. She shut us down for the most part, but this team kept fighting and competing.”

With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 19-21 on the season including a 4-2 record in Big 12 conference play. Texas now holds a 35-10 lead in the all-time series record, including a 16-4 record between the two teams in Austin.

The Red Raiders will be back in action on Friday when the Red Raiders will open a three-game series against the Kansas Jayhawks at Arroacha Ballpark. First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
