The 2017 season marked the 43rd three-game series between the Red Raiders (17-4, 3-0) and the Longhorns (13-9, 0-3) and improved Tech to 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1999.

With the win, the Red Raiders have now won six-straight games against nationally-ranked opponents, with victories over No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 2 LSU and No. 4 Arizona.

Eight different Red Raiders recorded a hit on Sunday, with six producing multi-hit performances. Freshman infielder Josh Jung posted his second-straight multi-hit game, racking up a career-high three singles against the Longhorns on Sunday. He also had a walk and two runs scored.

Orlando Garcia, Tanner Gardner, Hunter Hargrove, Ryan Long and John McMillon all posted two hits as well. It was Gardner’s team-high eighth multi-hit showing of the year, with Hargrove and Jung closely trailing with seven. Garcia and McMillon both recorded home runs in the second and eighth innings, respectively, while Garcia, Hargrove & Gardner each put down a double as well.

As a whole, the Red Raiders racked up 15 hits on Sunday afternoon, the ninth game this season with 10 or more base knocks. Of the 15, nine came with two strikes in the at-bat. On the flip side, the Red Raider bullpen only gave up one hit in 5.0 innings of work, as Texas was held to four hits for the second-straight game.

The Red Raiders improved to 5-0 when sophomore righty Ryan Shetter starts on the mound, who put together 4.0 innings against UT. The Friendswood, Texas, native struck out three batters, but gave up three runs on three hits in his outing. Junior left-hander Parker Mushinski was credited with the win to improve to 1-1 after tossing a spotless fifth inning. Junior LHP Dylan Dusek earned his first save of the year after adding three perfect frames, striking out one over the nine batters he faced.

The Longhorns put the first run on the board in the opening frame, as Jones led off with a walk and was moved over by a sacrifice bunt from Shaw that was quickly handled by a charging Jung from third. The three-hole hitter, Kacy Clemens, took the first pitch he saw into left field for an RBI single to give UT the early 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, Texas’ Boswell roped a double off the wall in right field to drive in Clemens, pushing the Longhorns ahead, 2-0, after the first inning.

Tech got one back in the top of the second thanks to a solo homer from Garcia. The El Paso native rocketed a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fourth blast of the year, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

UT answered with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning, beginning the frame with another leadoff walk to Kody Clemens. A bloop single to center field by Reynolds quickly put runners on the corners with no out and was fulfilled by Hamilton, who hit into a fielder’s choice at first, as Hargrove fired over to second base for the force out, allowing Clemens to score to make it 3-1.

Tech opened the top of the third with a pair of singles, coming from Long & Jung to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After a strikeout, Hargrove hit a grounder over to third base, allowing Long to score and Jung to move to second.

Berglund kept the inning going by racking up his third-straight game with an RBI base hit, placing one in between the left fielder and the shortstop with two away to score Jung and tie the game at three.

The Red Raiders busted it open in the top of the fourth with their third-straight scoring inning, tallying four runs on four hits, all with two outs. McMillon got the ball rolling by ripping a first-pitch single up the middle. Long followed suit by smacking an 0-2 strike into right to put runners on the corners. The first run of the frame came on the second pitch of the at-bat to Jung, as the ball bounced on the green part of the infield and around the catcher, allowing McMillon to easily score and Long to move to second to give Tech a 4-3 lead.

After a walk to Jung, Gardner & Hargrove produced back-to-back doubles, both going down their respective foul lines in right field & left field, respectively, as Gardner tallied one RBI & Hargrove picked up two to push Tech’s advantage to 7-3.

Texas cut into the lead after a sacrifice fly to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. They pushed another across with a balk shortly after to make it 7-5.

In the top of the eighth, Tech got the run back after McMillon crushed a solo home run over the left-center field wall to make it 8-5. It was his first homer of the year and second hit of the day, entering the afternoon with one knock.

The Red Raiders return home for their first two-game midweek swing of the year, taking on UNLV on March 21-22 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
