At Texas Tech media day I told one of Tech’s newest defensive lineman, Ondre Pipkins, who’s a transfer from Michigan, over 300 pounds. I said, ‘Tech hasn’t seen guys who can move the way you do on this campus in several years.
He of course thought that I was pulling his leg. What hasn’t been a joke though is through the first week of fall camp the defensive line looks significantly better. Begging the question whether or not they’ve gelled together this quickly or if it’s still a green offensive line that’s still putting it together.
“I hope it’s their progression. With our offensive line we have three returning starters, so it’s a pretty solid group. I think they are making strides. Those guys are growing up,” Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “With Kolin Hill and Ondre Pipkins and those freshman in the mix, they’re playing well.”
“You know coming from blue chip programs they have high expectations,” sophomore defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko said. “To play along guys like that, and to have the energy they bring every day, it’s just awesome.”
That same day, Tech’s defensive coordinator David Gibbs, told Red Raider Nation that one of the biggest problems that they had with the defensive line group specifically was what they didn’t have. Bodies. Nine new faces are now along this defensive line, including the two transfers. Obviously meaning that they can rotate more bodies through, keeping guys fresher, and hopefully in turn leading to better play on the field, where it all starts up front in the trenches.
