Wayland Baptist football was disappointed after last season’s 4-6 record. With plenty of experience coming back this year Coach Butch Henderson and the Pioneers hope things can turn around in 2016,
“experience and knowing what your going to face knowing when you get down into especially conference play the level you got to play at, that’s just invaluable to you, it lets you grow.”
The Pioneers will be led by middle linebacker Alden Mann who was named a NAIA preseason All-American, the senior linebacker says the defense needs play with heart in order to succeed
“play every play like it’s our last, I think we’re really strong up front I think we got a good core of linebackers and a good secondary and if we just play like we know how to play we’ll be successful.”
Wayland was picked to finish fourth in the Central States Football League Pre Season Poll, but many players think the team has a higher potential.
Senior Cornerback Josh Paul says, “finishing fourth yeah that gives me a chip on my shoulder cause I know deep down we’re better than that, I know in the past years we haven’t really shown that but I feel like this year is the year we can pull together.”
The Pioneers open up their season next Thursday against Lyon College.
