Last season the Estacado Matadors were far from perfect finishing the season with a 1-3 district record, and 2-8 overall.

A new season brings change to the Matador football program with head man Marcus Shavers taking over the helm in his first year with the team.

Coach Shavers has already begun leaving his mark on his new team, “I want to be known right away as a program that does the little things right, a group of guys that are disciplined enough football players to come in and do the little things that their coaches ask them to do”.

A new head coach can also be a difficult adjustment for the current players on the team, but senior running back Tyrese Nathan says Coach Shavers made it easy,

“you know at first I thought it would be kind of hard adjusting to a new coach because I was so familiar with Coach Servance, but when Coach Shavers came in he just made it like not even hard to get used to him”.

On the field look out for Tyrese Nathan, the senior rushed for 734 yards and six touchdowns last season. He will be expected to lead the Estacado offense and his offensive coordinator Robert Boone couldn’t say enough about his star running back,

“awesome kid first of all, he’s just a kid that’s going to be there first, he’s going to be there last, he’s one of the hardest practice players and he’s very explosive”.

One question mark heading into the season is the quarterback position, Bo Simms and Jacob Bustamante are currently battling for the starting spot.
