The Texas Tech Women’s Tennis team earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship after defeating No. 9 Vanderbilt, 4-2, on Friday.
“I am so excited for this group,” said head coach Todd Petty. “It’s a big step in their development and professionalism to get a win like this. I have the upmost respect for Vanderbilt, they won a national title two years ago. We had to grow a lot today to win that match. I was speechless.”
Texas Tech (4-1) opened the match with two wins in doubles play to claim the doubles point.
Vanderbilt (3-2) tied the match 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court one as No. 15 Gabriela Talaba fell to No. 4 Astra Sharma.
Junior Sarah Dvorak fell to Georgina Sellyn in three sets (6-0, 0-6, 6-1) as the Commodores took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Sophomore Felicity Maltby tied the match 2-2 with a three-set victory over No. 8 Sydney Campbell. The win was her first over a Top 10 opponent this season.
Junior Katelyn Jackson gave the Lady Raiders a 3-2 lead with her come-from-behind win on court six. She defeated Vanderbilt’s Emily Smith, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
