Junior Gabriela Talaba is the first Texas Tech women’s tennis player to earn a Big 12 weekly honor this season as she was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.
Talaba had an outstanding first week of spring play. After dropping a tough three-set match to Vanderbilt’s No. 2 Astra Sharma on the opening day of the Miami Spring Invitational last Friday, Talaba won two matches in straight sets over Top 15 opponents.
On Saturday, she took down No. 6 Sinead Lohan of Miami in two sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. The win marked the highest ranked opponent win in singles play in school history.
The following day, Talaba defeated Kentucky’s No. 12 Aldila Sutjiadi in straight sets (7-5, 6-1) to finish 2-1 on the weekend.
The Lady Raiders will play in their season home opener this weekend as Texas Tech hosts the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Lady Raiders will face UC Santa Barbara while Arizona State and South Carolina face off on Saturday afternoon. The winners of each dual match will play on Sunday for a chance to advance to the ITA Indoor Championships in Connecticut.
