Happy Friday everyone! The cold front has arrived sooner than expected bringing isolated showers and thunderstorms to the eastern South Plains this morning. We are still expecting widespread convection across the South Plains this afternoon and this evening. Combined with that, temperatures have been heating up quickly allowing for more surface heating and therefore more instability. The southern South Plains are sitting in the marginal risk category for severe storms. This means that isolated storms may bring strong wind gusts, hail, and heavy downpours in the southern regions. Flooding will still be an issue for some this afternoon through tomorrow morning so please drive with caution.
Due to the early arrival of this cold front, our weekend is looking a bit drier with storms clearing out as early as Saturday afternoon. This is all dependent on how quickly the front clears out of the region this evening. Next week is also looking to be more on the dry side with temperatures moving back into the low 90’s by mid-week.
