KAMC’s Storm Team Meteorologist Alex O’Brien has the forecast for 12.6.18.

TODAY: The cold air is arriving today, with most of the region staying in the 40s this afternoon. The forecast for Lubbock is 43 degrees. Wind will be chilly, gusting over 20 mph from the north. The sky will be mostly cloudy today.

WINTER STORM: A Winter Storm Watch is in place for Curry, Roosevelt, and northern Lea counties in New Mexico and in Bailey, Borden, Briscoe, Castro, Cochran, Cottle, Crosby, Dawson, Dickens, Floyd, Gaines, Garza, Hale, Hall, Hockley, Kent, King, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Motley, Parmer, Swisher, Terry, and Yoakum counties in Texas from midnight tonight until Saturday at noon. Hazards include, snow accumulations from 1-5 inches and ice accumulations up to 0.25″. Travel will be treacherous, especially Friday night and Saturday morning. Power outages may occur where ice or heavy snow falls.

SNOW TOTALS: The latest Storm Team forecast is for 1-3 inches of snow possible for Lubbock and the central South Plains. From Muleshoe to Plainview and Childress, totals may reach or exceed 5 inches. In the Rolling Plains, and the southern South Plains, freezing rain is most likely with a chance of up to an inch of snow. 

TIMING: Friday precipitation will likely be rain for most of the day, but there are windows of time when temperatures are below freezing that icing can occur (morning and after dark). A brief window during Friday morning’s commute has the possibility of freezing drizzle or light rain. Rain showers or thunderstorms are likely Friday afternoon. On Friday night precipitation will transition from rain to snow into Saturday morning. This period will be the most hazardous for travel.
