KAMC’s Storm Team Meteorologist Alex O’Brien has the forecast 5.11.18.
TODAY: Another day of record heat is possible today. The forecast high for Lubbock is 100 degrees. The record stands at 101 degrees, set in 2000. A dryline is beginning to set up here in West Texas, and it will move east of the Caprock today. This will leave most of the area with relative humidity less than 10% this afternoon. Winds will be breezy from the southwest 20-25 mph. With these conditions, a RED FLAG WARNING is in place from noon to 9 pm for the central and western South Plains. Another threat for possible grassfire development will be possible dry thunderstorms in the northeast South Plains. Tonight will be mild in the mid 60s, perfect for dinner on the patio.
THIS WEEKEND: Saturday remains very hot with a forecast high of 98 degrees. Once again, Saturday maybe be a possible record breaker, as the previous record stands at 98 degrees. The dryline will begin to influence our weather even more, plus we are watching a low pressure system in the Rockies to lead to possible thunderstorms. On Saturday, we are still likely too dry for significant rain chances. But, by Sunday we will be on the humid side of the dryline and there is a 20% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Some may be strong, with hail and gusty wind, so a Severe Weather Alert Day has been issued Sunday. Temperatures will be warm on Sunday as well, in the 70s and 80s for Mother’s Day brunch, and a high of 92 later in the afternoon.
