KAMC’s Storm Team Meteorologist Alex O’Brien has the forecast for 5.23.18.
TODAY: Today, temperatures will be seasonable in the mid 80s for the South Plains. The forecast high in Lubbock is 85 degrees, which is neat the average high of 86. There is a 20% chance of thunderstorms this evening, favoring the western side of the region. Thunderstorms will develop in eastern New Mexico in the early evening, move towards the state line after dinner time, and if they can hold together, will trek towards Lubbock late tonight. We have the humidity in place today, but we are missing a few key factors in the forecast, such as lift and support from the jet stream, to keep storms moving and holding together overnight. Tonight’s low temperature will be 64 degrees in Lubbock.
TOMORROW: Temperatures will continue to rise through the end of the week. The forecast high for Thursday is 89 degrees in Lubbock. Upper 80s and a few 90s are possible for the South Plains. Winds will be from the south 10-15 mph. There is a 10% chance for a few isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK: Memorial Day weekend will be sunny and hot! Temperatures will make it to the upper 90s, and possibly some 100s. The atmosphere will be stable, keeping the sky mostly clear. We are watching for possible heat and dryline induced thunderstorms to develop Sunday and Monday, but chances remain below 10% at this point.
