We avoided the afternoon & evening thunderstorms on Thursday, but we did not avoid the heat! Lubbock set a new record high yesterday, reaching 109°. The previous record was 103°, set in 1998. Today will be “cooler”, as highs will stay in the upper 90s. Lubbock will reach 99°. Clouds will increase this afternoon & we’ll see scattered thunderstorms after 2:00 pm. These storms will cover 30% of the area. Any storm will have wind gusts at 60-65 mph, with non-severe hail (penny to nickel size).

Any thunderstorms that we see in the area today will last through 1:00-2:00 tomorrow morning. After that, things will begin to clear out. Saturday will see isolated thunderstorms in our northern row of counties & into the panhandle. Coverage of these storms will be less than 10%, since most of them will stay outside of our viewing area. Skies will be mostly sunny tomorrow, as Lubbock will get to a high of 97°, only four degrees above average. Wind will be at 10-15 mph.
