Happy Thursday everyone! It has been a much warmer day across the South Plains with highs moving into the upper 50’s. This is all due to the high pressure system that took over the region. It will stick around for one more day allowing high temperatures on Friday to reach into the upper 60’s, with a few folks even moving into the low 70’s. This rapid warm up will be very short-lived though as we watch for two fronts to push across the area this weekend bringing us another dose of cold Arctic air. The first, weaker front will move in on Saturday dropping our highs just below average into the low 50’s. The second, stronger front will then move in on Sunday. This will be our thermal game-changer. High temperatures will yet again struggle to get past the freezing mark on Sunday afternoon and low temperatures on your New Year’s Day will plummet into the single digits. Despite the temperatures fluctuations throughout the next week, low temperatures will remain below the freezing mark every day so make sure to keep your pets and potted plants indoors and to turn sprinklers off to prevent a multitude of issues on the roadways. Finally, while previous model runs showed a chance for wintry precipitation, they are now starting to back off of this trend. We will still monitor this very closely, so stay tuned for updates!
