A strong upper-level low will continue to dig into the southern half of the US providing us lift for storms to develop. Most of the storms are expected to develop around lunch time and move out of the South Plains by the evening. Most of the South Plains is under a slight risk for severe weather this afternoon. Threats in this area include localized flooding, hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Once this system clears out by the evening we’ll stay dry overnight and tomorrow. There may be an isolated shower tomorrow morning has the moisture wraps around the low that will continue to move off to the east. Then, we’ll be watching our next chance for snow late Friday and into Saturday morning. As of now, the timing for this event looks to be overnight Friday and into Saturday morning before clearing out by the afternoon. Accumulations look to be light here in Lubbock and to the southeast South Plains, with areas receiving less than an inch. However, areas to the north and west, especially in New Mexico, look to receive higher amounts of snowfall by the end of Saturday.

This is something that we’ll be watching closely over the next couple of days, but for now, our threat will be the strong to severe storms later on today.
