Happy Friday! We’re starting off the morning very cold with temperatures in the 20s and 30s, but for many of us we’re feeling like the teens and 20s. Most of us are dry and cloudy this morning, but areas to the north and west of Lubbock are waking up to some snowfall this morning. Snow began to fall overnight in New Mexico and started to make it’s way across the state line and move into West Texas. Some places to the north and west will wake up with a coating of snow as temperatures are well below freezing. The snow will continue for much of the day today in our northwestern counties, however, as we head into the overnight hours tonight the snow will try to develop across more parts of the South Plains.
For Lubbock, and much of the South Plains and Rolling Plains, today will feature clouds and well below average temperatures. Highs today won’t get high as we’re only expected to be in the mid 30s by the afternoon. The winter jacket will be needed all day as temperatures will feel like the 20s all day today.
Changes begin overnight tonight for much of the western South Plains as more snow tries to develop. Many places will see flurries overnight tonight accumulating to about an inch to two inches. Our northwestern counties can expect anywhere from two to almost 5 inches with locally higher amounts. These areas are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 AM Saturday. Travel will be difficult during this time period and is not recommended.
As for Lubbock, flurries are possible in the Hub City, but accumulations will be light. An inch or less is expected in Lubbock by tomorrow afternoon, with a few locally higher amounts. Most of the snow will be confined to the west of the I-27 corridor, meaning the areas to the east of Lubbock including the Rolling Plains will miss out on this event.
