Happy Friday! The first day of summer gave up dry conditions with temperatures only into the mid 90s. Even though temperatures recently were relatively cool, this will not last for long. We’re tracking more triple-digit heat in the forecast.  Unfortunately we’ll have triple-digit heat sooner than later. West Texas is under a small ridge of high pressure which allows for sunny conditions and an increase in temperatures. Later in the day, we have the chance for an isolated storm during the evening hours as a piece of energy makes it’s way into West Texas. The Storm Prediction Center has put counties to the south of Lubbock in a thunderstorm risk category, but counties to the north of Lubbock are in a marginal risk of severe weather for today. Risks in these areas include damaging winds and small/moderate sized hail as the primary threats.

The storms should move out overnight leaving us with quiet conditions for the evening. However, there is more rain in the forecast. An approaching cold front will push through the South Plains on Saturday. Temperatures are not expected to decrease much, but they will be slightly cooler compared to the triple-digit heat we’ll have today. Isolated storms are also expected tomorrow during the late afternoon and evening hours. These storms are not expected to be severe as the Storm Prediction Center has put most of the South Plains into a thunderstorm risk for Saturday.

Unfortunately, the triple-digits make a return over the weekend, but there are cooler temperatures in store starting next week that don’t include the triple-digits.
