Today was much cooler across most of the South Plains thanks to some cloud cover this morning into the early afternoon from a disturbance off to the east. This disturbance also brought some rain into a few of our eastern counties this morning, before quickly moving off to the northeast into Oklahoma. The rain chances aren’t over just yet though. We are watching for the potential for storms to develop this evening. These storms are expected to develop to the north and west of Lubbock, where there were no influence of clouds today allowing for temperatures to get up into the mid 90s. Most of the rain is expected to be out of much of the South Plains around midnight, however, there could still be a few lingering showers across some areas. The Storm Prediction Center has put the eastern half of the South Plains in a marginal risk for severe weather this evening. Damaging winds, heavy downpours, and small to moderate sized hail are the main threats for this area. Lubbock is not included in this marginal risk, but there could still be some heavy downpours, gusty winds, and frequent lightning.
More showers and storms are likely tomorrow during the afternoon and evening hours, however, they are not expected to be severe as we are only in a thunderstorm risk. Heavy downpours, gusty winds, and frequent lightning will be possible tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow look to be in the mid 90s, however, some of the northern counties may be a bit cooler as a cold front pushes down from the north. Unfortunately, this front will stall out before it reaches the Lubbock metro area.
The rest of the week looks to be dry with temperatures in the mid 90s. We are monitoring a disturbance that is looking to make it’s way into Texas midweek, however, the rain from this disturbance looks to be staying to the south of us. Although, the clouds from this disturbance could enter our region giving us a nice relief from the sun and dropping temperatures below the average.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
