This morning was certainly a cold one, and it’s still going to be a somewhat chilly afternoon. Morning clouds will clear out by the afternoon leaving behind mostly sunny conditions with temperatures warming up into the upper 50s to lower 60s. Tonight will be another chilly one, but not as cold as last night. Temperatures tonight will drop into the lower 40s making it feel more mild than last night’s 25°.

While this afternoon remains chilly, BIG changes come tomorrow. A ridge of high pressure will build in tonight and early tomorrow which will help our temperatures soar into the 80s by the afternoon. While temperatures will be nice and comfortable, the West Texas wind does return. Winds tomorrow will be sustained out of the southwest at 20-30 mph. Couple the warm and windy conditions together and there is the potential for a fire weather risk tomorrow. Lubbock and areas west are in an elevated risk for fire weather tomorrow, while our eastern New Mexico counties are in a critical risk. This means that outdoor burning is highly discourage tomorrow.

Our next weather system that we are watching will be a cold front arriving Friday that will drop our high temperatures back into the mid 70s. With the passage of this cold front, most of us look to have an increase in cloud cover across the South Plains, but there is the chance for a few isolated showers developing late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Unfortunately, that’s all this rain looks to be is isolated.

We’ll be watching for the potential for more rain back come the beginning of next week.
