Short Term Forecast:
*** Heat Advisory in effect until 8:00 PM Monday for Borden and Scurry County. ***
It will be a couple of degrees cooler on this Memorial Day cross the South Plains and the Rolling Plains, but we still expect highs in the upper 90s and lower 100s. Today will be sunny to mostly sunny but there is a very small chance of a thunderstorm late in the afternoon and early in the evening. For most of us, it’s going to be a hot and dry day. We’ll become breezy this afternoon. Mostly clear conditions are expected this evening and tonight. Lows will drop back into the upper 60s and lower 70s. We’ll stay breezy this evening, but the wind will decrease overnight. On Tuesday, it will be sunny to mostly sunny with slightly warmer highs in the lower 100s.
Extended Forecast:
Hot weather will dominate the forecast across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains this week. Triple-digit heat will hold in place across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains this week. The hottest days will be during the later part of the week. Models show high temperatures falling back into the upper 90s by late in the weekend. Average high temperatures for late May and early June are in the middle 80s.
Overnight lows will be stay on the warm side with upper 60s and lower 70s expected each day. Average low temperatures for late May and early June should be in the upper 50s and lower 60s
Overall, it looks to be a hot and dry week across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains. Models do show a very slight chance for a thunderstorm late in the afternoon and into the early evening on Monday. The rest of the week and this coming weekend look dry for now.
Drought Update:
Our recent rainfall did help improve drought conditions across the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Most of the area was dropped back to severe stage drought status. However, areas that didn’t receive as much rain did stay in extreme to exception status. Below is the graphical look at the latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor that was released on Thursday (May 24).

Tuesday: Sunny to mostly sunny and hot. Highs in the lower 100s. South wind 10-15 mph.
