Say it ain’t snow! Yes, that’s right. There is snow in the forecast. We’re tracking a strong cold front on Sunday evening that will drop temperatures drastically, but that won’t bring our chance for snow. An upper-level low will dig into the South Plains bringing the chance for wintry precipitation in the forecast. While we’re still about 36 hours out, there is still a lot of unknowns. There’s more and more confidence that there will be a snow event for much of the South Plains, but there’s a lower confidence on the snow totals.

Let’s start off with the arrival of this system. It looks to arrive overnight on Sunday and early Monday morning. For most of us it’ll start off as a wintry mix as surface temperatures are just at the freezing mark. This wintry precipitation looks to quickly change into snow as colder air continues to push into the region. This will look like it will effect your morning commute as snow continues throughout the morning and into the afternoon hours.

Here’s where it gets tricky. If surface temperatures are just above freezing, that will turn our precipitation into a wintry mix, if not a wet rain. If surface temperatures stay below freezing than it’s more likely we’ll have snow. However, If the ground stays above freezing for a good chunk of time, the snow will not stick which will reduce our totals. Vice versa, our snow totals will go up. As of now, Lubbock can receive anywhere from a dusting to 2″ of snow by the end of Monday with higher totals up north.

Either way, Monday morning’s commute looks to be like a messy one.
