Short Term Forecast:

It’s been a hot and dry Saturday here across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains. Highs this afternoon ranged from the upper 90s to the lower 100s. We warmed up to 102° here in Lubbock today, which sets a new record high for the day. The old record for today is 101° from 1945. Scattered high clouds will continue to stream across the area this evening. Expect mostly clear conditions to return overnight with lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Sunday will be mostly sunny and still hot with highs in the upper 90s and lower 100s. There is a very small chance for a late day thunderstorm.
Extended Forecast:
Hot weather will continue across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains on Sunday and Monday. Highs will be in the upper 90s to low 100s for Sunday and Memorial Day on Monday. High temperatures for the coming week will be range between 100° and 105° each afternoon Tuesday through Friday. Long range model data shows highs falling back into the upper 90s and low 100s by next Saturday. Average high temperatures for late May and early June are in the middle 80s.
Overnight lows will be stay on the warm side with upper 60s and lower 70s expected each day. Normal lows for late should be around 60-degrees. Average low temperatures for late May and early June are in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
Models are showing a small chance for a thunderstorm on Sunday in the late afternoon and early evening . There is also a small chance for a thunderstorm on Memorial Day Monday in the late afternoon and evening as well. The American model (GFS) is showing dry weather for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and most of Friday. This model does bring a slight chance for a thunderstorm back Friday evening. The European model (ECMWF) keeps a slight chance for a thunderstorm late each afternoon and in the evening Tuesday through Saturday.
Drought Update:
Our recent rainfall did help improve drought conditions across the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Most of the area was dropped back to severe stage drought status. However, areas that didn’t receive as much rain did stay in extreme to exception status. Below is the graphical look at the latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor that was released on Thursday (May 24).
