Short Term Forecast:
The clouds we’ve had on this Sunday were not expected, but they did provide some shade after a warm day across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains. Highs this afternoon ranged from the upper 80s to the lower 90s across the South Plains. It was warmer with lower to middle 90s across the Rolling Plains. The clouds will being to decrease later this evening with mostly clear conditions returning overnight. We’ll drop down into the upper 50s and lower 60s around the area. Monday will be mostly sunny, breezy and warmer as we climb into the middle 90s in the afternoon.
Extended Forecast:
Above average temperatures and mostly dry weather will dominate the extended forecast here across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains.
Highs will be in the middle 90s for most of the week, with upper 90s expected on Friday and Saturday. A front will cool highs back into the lower 80s next Sunday. Overnight lows will stay on the mild side in the lower to middle 60s this week and into the first part of the weekend. We’ll drop back into the upper 50s to lower 60s next Sunday.

There is a slight chance for a storm or two Tuesday evening and into Tuesday night. Otherwise, the forecast will remain dry. We’ll watch late week and into the weekend for chance of a storm developing on the dryline in the area. The front arriving on Sunday could be a focal point for a storm to develop as well.

Drought Update:
The latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor indicates some slight change in drought status across the South Plains and the Rolling Plains since last week. Extreme to severe stage drought conditions are in place across most of the South Plains. Moderate stage drought conditions remain in place across the far southwestern portions of the South Plains. As of Sunday evening, 1.10″ of rain has been reported at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in 2018.
