Winter Weather Advisory:
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 11:00 a.m. for all of the South Plains and the Rolling Plains. Very light snow, freezing drizzle and freezing fog overnight and this morning have created icy spots on some roadways, bridges and overpasses.
Short Term Forecast:
Very light snow, freezing drizzle and freezing fog overnight have created some travel issues this morning across the Lubbock metro area and across the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Temperatures were into the teens across nearly all of the viewing area as of 5:00 a.m. Precipitation should end later this morning, but we’ll remain cloudy until early afternoon. We’ll become mostly cloudy in the afternoon. Highs today will range from the upper 20s to the middle 30s. It’ll become partly cloudy this evening and tonight with lows in the lower to middle 20s.
Extended Forecast:
Warmer weather will return to the South Plains and the Rolling Plains on Thursday with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. It’ll be even warmer on Friday with highs in the middle 60s. We’ll turn cooler on Saturday with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Even colder air will spill into the South Plains and the Rolling Plains on New Year’s Eve (Sunday) and New Year’s Day (Monday). Highs will be in the 30s on Sunday and the 20s and 30s on Monday. We’ll warm back into the 40s on Tuesday. Overnight lows will stay mostly into the 20s but will fall into the 10s by Sunday and Monday morning. Forecast models continue to hint at the possibility of some light wintry precipitation on Sunday and Monday. We’ll keep an eye on it, but it’s pretty much a wait and see game at this point.
