Weather Ready Nation Report: Groundhog Day

It’s a tradition dating back to the 1800’s. A hairy rodent residing in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania comes out of the ground searching for his shadow. What may just seem like a silly event, is actually a holiday that was brought to the the United States by German immigrants.

As the legend goes, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow we’ll get six more weeks of winter. But if he comes out of his burrow and does not see his shadow, spring is on its way. But how accurate is this little rodent?

Since the holiday began, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 104 times and has not seen his shadow only 17 times. After checking records it turns out that little Phil is only 39% right. I got a chance to meet with some of his local Lubbock relatives earlier today to see what they think on cousin Philly’s predictions.

Kellianne: “So what do you think of Punxsutawney Phil?”

Prairie Dog: *crickets*

Kellianne: “Do you think he’s going to see his shadow again?”

Prairie Dog: *crickets*

Kellianne: “Do you like the winter?”

Prairie Dog: *crickets*

So Punxsutawney Phil’s cousins refused to comment, but after looking at the forecast it looks to be like a sunny day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania….so he may just see his shadow once again.
