Happy Wednesday everyone! Temperatures were much cooler today with the passage of yesterday’s cold front. High temperatures remained in the mid-70’s and lots of sunshine but there are big changes expected to begin tomorrow.
Thursday we will watch for a closed low to approach the region and for the dryline to set up right along the Texas/New Mexico border. The low will crank winds up during the afternoon and by the evening, the combination of the low and the transitioning dryline will bring a chance for potentially severe storms. Right now the Storm Prediction Center has placed the central portions of the South Plains under the Slight Risk Category and our biggest threats will be hail and damaging downburst wind gusts. Storm potential will begin early evening on Thursday and continue through Friday morning.
As the system exits the region on Friday, it will bring very strong winds and therefore blowing dust and a higher fire weather potential. Hence it is important to be very cautious when barbecuing and to make sure that cigarettes are put out properly. Thankfully, beginning on Saturday continuing throughout next week, we are expecting lots of sunshine with a slow warming trend.
