Updated Story: LISD and Roosevelt ISD Issue Statements on Shooting Death of 12-Year-Old
The following is a press release from Lubbock Police:
Investigators with the Lubbock Police Department’s Persons Crimes Unit is investigating the death of a 12-year-old male who was shot outside a restaurant at the corner of 50th Street and Interstate 27. The child was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At this time, preliminary information indicates the shooting appears to be accidental.
On Thursday, at approximately 6:20 p.m., the Lubbock Police Department received a call referencing a male had been shot inside a vehicle at the restaurant’s drive-thru.
Upon further investigation, officers found the incident involved a family of six inside a car going through the drive-thru of the restaurant. Officers were advised that a teen sibling in the vehicle was in possession of a gun. At some point inside the car, the gun was pulled out and was fired, striking the 12-year-old.
Detectives with LPD’s Persons Crimes Unit were called to the scene to begin an investigation into the shooting. Detectives are investigating all aspects of this incident including how the teen came into possession of the gun. They are also investigating who knew the teen was in possession of the gun.
All involved parties in the shooting are cooperating with investigators.
Investigators will continue to gather information and present the case to the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office for their review.
