Littlefield Police on Tuesday addressed rumors of threats directed at Littlefield schools.
“As of the current time there is no viable threat. The situation is being closely monitored by local agencies and authorities,” Littlefield PD said on Facebook.
On Monday night, one of the messages going around on social media said in part, “Just found out that a student posted on Snapchat that they were gonna shoot up the Littlefield High School.”
Littlefield PD addressed the situation by saying, “Our officers have followed up on the information being posted and contact has been made with the named parties family.”
To calm fears, police said, “Littlefield Police Officers will be in and around all school campuses as much as possible.”
Police also said, “We are asking members of the community, students, and parents to not add unsubstantiated rumors to the social media posts. However; if you have any actual information, or screenshots of posts or threats on social media of any kind relating to this matter please contact the Littlefield Police Department at 806-385-5161.”

Littlefield ISD said they also take these threats seriously.
“The very number one goal for us to keep our children safe and our teachers safe,” said superintendent of Littlefield ISD, Robert Dillard.
These threats have caused West Texas school administrators to assess their own policies when it comes to school intruders and shootings.
“It’s time for us to sit down and reanalyze. We want to look over our crisis management plan. Let’s look at every article, every step of it and see if there’s a way to improve it,” said Dillard.
Dillard said several parents kept their kids home from school on Tuesday after these threats were publicized.
The Floydada Police Department also posted this update on their Facebook page of an arrest they made for a threat at Floydada High School.
“On February 20th 2018 The Floydada Police Department was notified by Floydada High School staff of a Ex-Student making making threats to shoot up the high school. Sgt. Ramon the FISD School Resource Officer worked quickly to identify the suspect and have a Warrant issued for his arrest for Terroristic Threat. The suspect was located in Crosby County and was taken into custody. O’Donnell ISD also said Monday night a threat had been made.
“It is necessary to notify you that we have had a threat made by a secondary student toward the school. This student will not be allowed on campus until further notice,” the ISD said on Facebook.
“Both the O’Donnell Police Department and the Lynn County Sheriff’s Department will be present at school,” O’Donnell ISD said.
Harmony Science Academy in Lubbock notified parents Monday about a safety concern of a different nature.
Harmony said, “There was a report of a suspicious person with a firearm in the area, so the campus went into a lockdown. All students and staff were safe. The police cleared the area and did not find anyone…”
These recent messages from local schools come in the wake of a school shooting on February 14 in Parkland, Florida. Nikolas Cruz, 19, was arrested and charged with 17 counts of murder.
Tuesday morning, Littlefield PD provided the following update:
Chief Ross Hester with Littlefield PD has announced that there is no actual threat.
Reports show this an ongoing issue between two minors. The threat stems from a photo of a girl holding a gun in Littlefield posted several years ago. A girl in San Angelo then took that photo and changed the text to indicate the girl was going to open fire on a local school.
The incident is still under investigation.
