State Senator Charles Perry of Lubbock unveiled a petition drive Thursday morning to protest the re-opening of Planned Parenthood clinics in West Texas.

In April, a donor pledged $9 million to construct two health centers in San Angelo and Midland that closed in 2013.

“The abortion industry has officially targeted West Texas,” Perry said on Facebook and Twitter.  “Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, has multi-million dollar plans to re-open clinics in our communities, and they must be stopped.”

Perry asked on Facebook, “Will you join me and other Texans in signing this petition to voice your opposition to Planned Parenthood?”

It appeared that the signatures would be symbolic and not legally binding.

The petition page said in part, “By signing your name below, you’re registering your opposition to Planned Parenthood’s efforts to move into West Texas. Every signature creates more momentum.”

Perry authored Senate Bill 415 in the most recent legislative session.  It would have banned dilation and evacuation abortions, which have also been called dismemberment abortions. The bill did not become law.

Perry has been scored as 100 percent pro-life by Texas Right to Life.

“Senator Perry is one of Texas Right to Life’s 2017 Pro-Life Heroes,” the group said.
